Capstone Project: Early Intervention to Prevent Youth Violence: There has been a 42% increase in reports of non-fatal shootings in New Haven from 2018 to 2019. As in many large, urban communities, youth in New Haven are exposed to acts of gun violence. One small community, in particular, Newhallville, is responsible for 25% of the city’s total number of non-fatal shootings. New Haven has recently reached the end of a $1 million grant with the U.S. Department of Justice to address this issue. The program was called the Newhallville Safe Neighborhood Initiative (NSNI) and showed positive results. The new funding is crucial to maintain the effectiveness that New Haven police officers and the community have seen.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
